Amplifying local voices and actions for justice.
This week’s events remind us how important it is to stand with our Somali neighbors, our immigrant neighbors, and anyone in our community who is being harmed or marginalized. None of us should have to navigate fear alone. We also need to stay vigilant, aware of what is happening around us, attentive to our community, and committed to protecting one another.
Over the past few years, many of us have learned to turn inward to cope, to protect our peace, avoid conflict, or simply survive. But community cannot grow in isolation, and care cannot happen from a distance. We cannot wait for the government to fix what we know is broken. We create safety when we choose each other.
The choices we make right now matter beyond this moment; the next generation is watching. They will inherit the world we shape with our decisions, our voice, and our courage. They are looking to us for leadership and for proof that we stood up when it mattered. How do we want to be remembered in the story they will tell about this moment in history?
This is a good week to remember that our power is collective and our well-being is tied together. Please take time to review some of the opportunities listed below. They offer ways to learn how to be in community, how to join community, and how to protect one another. These are resources we should not take for granted. They exist because many organizations have stepped forward and shared their knowledge and support.

DFL December Food Drive
This month, the DFL food drive will benefit the Pamoja Women’s food pantry. Their shelves are completely empty, and many of the families they serve are currently too afraid to shop for essentials due to the climate created by recent rhetoric. Pamoja Women support east African women and their families by helping them overcome barriers, access resources, and thrive. Your donations will make an immediate difference for these families. We will collect food at our office and deliver to Pajoma Women, where it will be distributed to neighbors in need.
Drop off shelf stable items at the DFL offices - 1500 1st Ave NE, Suite A throughout the month of December. Our office is open 1pm - 4pm M-F. Additionally, we will have a donation box in the vestibule, which is accessible from 8am-5pm M-F (come through the main door of the 1500 building and take the first left).
Please help us show up for our Somali neighbors in this time of need and let them know we stand with them. Unequivocally.

Community Spotlight: Christmas Anonymous
For the last 50 years, Christmas Anonymous, a completely volunteer run organization, has brought holiday happiness to people in the Rochester area.
They help our community in two ways:
Helping families in need via our ‘store’ where parents can shop without paying for new and gently-used toys; teen gifts; boys and girls new clothing; new hats, gloves, and knitwear; and new or used shoes, boots, and skates.
Helping seniors in need with boxes of food for a holiday meal, stationery, and other household items.
This year Christmas Anonymous still needs volunteers to sign up to help set up their store, move and inventory donations, pack food boxes for seniors, help the day of the ‘store’, help with cleanup, and more! Volunteer opportunities are available for Wednesday 12/10, Thursday 12/11, Friday 12/12, Store day Saturday 12/13, and Monday 12/15. Learn more or sign up HERE
